Preview : South Wales Unsigned Takeover Festival @ Newport Centre : 29/08/2008

This event looks like it's going to be a cracker, 7 bands, all of them good enough to get signed so I'm expecting there to be a fair few record label types running the rule over the talent on stage. It's only 6 quid too and I fucking love the poster. Honestly, I can't think of any reasons not to go.

The event is called the South Wales Unsigned Take Over Festival and is South Wales's first unsigned annual music festival, its a night where the best of unsigned bands in South Wales come together to show what an amazing unsigned music scene we have here in South Wales. its a chance for the headliners to show why they souldn't be unsigned for much longer, and for new comers to show what there made of.

This exclusive music event takes place in the River Side Suite, Newport Centre and if you like pop, rock, screamo, or indie you'd be a fool to miss the Unsigned Take Over Fest.

The New 1920
The New 1920 have only been playing live for a short time, but have already made an impression that is rapidly gaining them a solid fanbase and a reputation for being one of the most energetic bands to recently emerge from the South Wales music scene. Mixing equal parts indie and rock together with rhythmic vocal melodies and hook filled choruses the quartet deliver songs that are sharp bursts of kinetic energy designed to dance to.

Kick Box Riot
'upbeat indie-rock similarity to Funeral for a Friend in delivery if not style, with the post-hardcore ripped out and replaced with subtler indie-pop stylings.' - 'This is a rock, Indie, Eclecticore mish-mash of styles and genres, bundled into agiant experimental concrete mixer washer/dryer and left to coagulate into a sound that is both altogether new and retro sounding.'

The Arteries
Exciting, fast pace punk rock swansea band The Arteries have been making music together since 2002 and have had the pleasure of sharing a stage with alot of well established bands all around the uk they will be gracing the stage at the RiverSide Suite with expectations of a fast pace entertaining, and very fun set. keep your eye on these boys, i expect they'll go far.

SaidMike
A five piece synth-rock band from Pontypridd. SaidMike have been together for a over 4 years constantly working hard playing gigs as much as possible. SaidMike played 2006's taste of chaos in the CIA, Cardiff, along with a tour of Wales and numerous support slots to acts such as Adequate Seven, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, The Blackout, Fony, Brigade, Enter Shikari, Kids In Glass Houses and more.

Marks Set Go
well known in Newport and throughout south Wales for there catchy pop rock sound and captivating lyrics, the band recently apeared on ITV's 'Unsigned'. With influences such as, Kings Of Leon and The Wonder Years, they clearly have a wide range of music taste. You can expect a good set from these boys.

Kid Keep Dancing
an emo band with plenty of energy as one might expect and some good songwriting abilities. They're great fun on stage and kick ass to watch.

Lights Over Cairo
energetic punk driven rock pop, these boys are always up for a laugh, and always try to have as much fun as they possibly can when there on stage they're this years 'new comers' so all the best to them.

Tickets are £6 (STBF) and available from Diverse Music and Newport Centre. Doors open at 5.30pm and the event goes on until 10.30pm.

Review : DJ Scotch Egg + Osaka Invasion / Death Of Her Money / Dethscalator @ Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff : 13/07/2008

Man, I’m hungover. My brain should be under a flannel, weeping, not poked violently by sadistic young ‘musicians’. But what do brains know: tonight’s rinse-out starts with two bands plying bracing assault music, high volume devastation bent into focussed riff worship. Although Death Of Her Money have a nice line in varying degrees of sludge Sabbath, and are the only band I’ve seen whose singer can uncork a white wine bottle midsong, Dethscalator edge them for hypnotically strung out noise, songs building to slowly destroy, or locking into waves of low end goodness.

The Osaka Invasion begins with a man in a loosely-tied kimono, standing on a drumstool, pointing to his knob. This is Bogulta, and they are also bracing, like being mugged by a naturist. They are drums and bass overdrive, playing over a mess of samples, and their cartoon Lightning Bolt sprint is ridiculously lovable. Maruosa is next, and shows what one man can do with a screaming laptop, when there’s no school tomorrow. Clots of noise, screaming, long hair; vaguely entertaining.

Quicker, drunker. We're edging towards dayglo brain abuse now: Ove-naxx might operate at the cuddlier end of breakcore, but his cheery mentalism still owns, and even prods the curious musicians from the upstairs indie meh-fest to wobble like grinning fools. And DJ Scotch Egg kind of takes all this twisted beered-up bonhomie and squares it. Not sure when Shige became the pied piper of booze casualties but you now get full pints mixing with the obscenely loud destructobeats in the air. It’s great, obviously, a little hairy goblin hopping through Gameboy noise levels, on wet equipment. Someone pushes a laptop through the front row, his friend’s face filling the screen. You can tell she’s watching the gig: she keeps putting her hands to her wide-eyed face. Too much fun.

Preview : Joy presents Threatmantics : 31/07/08

It's Joy time again, we've become a bit confused of late, May's gig went back a week and eventually ended up being June's gig as June's actual one got cancelled. Never mind all that though, we're back to our usual last Thursday slot (until next month, more later) and have a cracking bill for you.

Headlining we have the punk, folk indie rock of Threatmantics. Obvious comparison is early Gorkys when they were loud and unafraid to turn the amps up and rock out. Don't go thinking it's all crazy Welsh folk though (as one of them's from Watford), go check out the songs on their Myspace, Sali Mali kicks off like a deranged Dandy Warhols. They've recently played Glastonbury (check the BBC footage on their site) and are off to play Green Man not long after this gig. To I'll leave it to a reviewer of one of their shows supporting Clinic to sum them up: "Songs clatter and stomp with menace, and show that just because you're folksy, it doesn't mean you can't rock out. If Gorky's had listened to more Led Zeppelin whilst growing up then they might have sounded like this.". Topping.

Main support are The Moguls, I'm a bit screwed by this lot as I have no Jo Whiley cop out comparison to give you. They're from Liverpool and at times you can hear the quirkiness of bands like The Coral but with someone playing show tunes on piano instead of scratchy guitar parts. Their own Myspace says Indie/Electroacoustic/Rock but that doesn't tell the whole story either. Best you come and see them really, it would be the most satisfying solution for all of us.

You may have seen Holocene by now, they played at Joy when we still had the back room (sob) and played with Space In The 50s and Frommars in both Clwb and TJs. Purveyors of choppy indie rock, they're relatively new to this game and have already lost a drummer. Nothing of Spinal Tap proportions but still, pretty quick going.

Opening for us this month is Sofia. She's a Newport singer songwriter influenced by haircuts, Tredeger Park and Strongbow (well, that's what her profile says), go take a listen, she's recently played with Halflight and you can see the similarities between the two. It's well worth turning up early to catch her, she'll be on just before 9pm.

As usual entry is 4 quid on the door, that'll get you a limited (100) edition badge too, they'll be less than that left though as we'll've forced them on the bands beforehand. If you have a badge from a previous Joy night, wear it and we may well give you discount on the door. Depending on who's manning it and whether anyone's bought them a beer.

Next month's is on Tuesday 19th August, is in Mojo and features Tubelord, Blakfish and The Novocaines. More about that at a later date though.

33rd Degree Promotions are out to set a scene and create a gigging network to further the profile of all involved. This new and exciting company will be putting on explosive gigs that incorporate all genres and allows acts to perform to a variety of crowds. With a range of bands, solo artists, promoters and venues already on board, 33rd Degree Promotions was put together by performers for performers and aims to take the stage with a storm.

The first gig will be held in Cardiff City Centre at 10 Feet Tall on the 17th August with a truly thunderous Welsh line up that cannot be missed! The line up for the first event is as follows:

Spiridion
Moving from their native Pembrokeshire to Cardiff in order to start a band, Spiridion formed in November 2005. With band influences ranging from System of a Down and Tool, blending progressive rock roots with touches of genres as diverse as Rapcore and Ska, they create something truly original. The band has just finished recording their debut EP at Long Wave studio with producer Romesh Dodangoda. ‘My Only Answer’ went on sale on the 7th December 2007.

Jugganote
The Jugganote project started in January 2007. This four piece each have their own unique styles, influences and background of music. The outcome is a very unique blend of experimental and alternative styles. Jugganote put on a performance like no other, combining live instruments with hip hop's more conventional outputs, keeping the fun loving old school vibe alive and yet delivering a high impact and intense performance. Jugganote have an E.P. release on the 12th July titled ‘The Hold Up’.

Disgracelands
Formed in December 2006 as an independent group of musicians, their sound explores various avenues and they play a progressive blend of Drum ‘n’ Bass, Hip Hop and Progressive Rock. They create music that makes your brain dance and your ears bleed, with a live performance
that will far exceed your expectations. Download Disgracelands album titled ‘Ave It!’ for

Soulscience
Although a relatively new artist to the live scene, Soulscience, now gathering a hefty solo gigging backlog and most definitely a lot more to come, turns a laptop into an instrumental platform, creating a burst of music to make your head nod. Blending the styles of Experimental, Ambient Electronica and with the occasional use of live instrumental and vocal collaborations, Soulscience is a musical experience not to be missed.

DJ Buzz
A veteran to the turntabalist genre, DJ Buzz first made his mark reaching the DMC finals back in 1991. Since then he has ‘turned his tables’ to many different aspects of his genre, from writing and producing to performing and recording. Preview : EP Release : Joy of Sex

Joy of Sex release their debut self titled EP through their Robot Architect label on the 18th of August it will be accompanied by the free download "December, Month Of Plenty" released through Sound and Vision Downloads on the same day.

Joy of Sex are a new three-piece from Cardiff, two boys and a girl, with a drum machine, stand-up drums and three-way vocals. They agree on several things. Short songs, rhythm, repetition, noise.

Combining menacing cut-up rhythms with triple-barrelled vocal interplay that switches from sinister to playful; a unique concoction that's reminiscent of the taut art-punk dynamics of Wire. They hint at the electro post punk of PiL and share a kinship with fellow Cardiffian's The Victorian English Gentlemen's Club.

It's form meeting function. Newness, not novelty. Equality. Clang, scrape and bang. That is the Joy of Sex.

"December, Month Of Plenty" opens with a chorus of plaintive refrains, before rumbling along pavements of twitching bass and drums. Serrated guitars bleed like a stream of consciousness into a chanting chorus reminiscent of Mission of Burma's finer moments. Short and sharp, clocking in at around the two minute mark.

Public download will appear here on the 18th of August:

Preview : The Square Festival @ Ynys Fergi Farm, Borth : 26th/27th July

As a former student at Aberystwyth University (2003 - 2006, hello) I find it hard to imagine the feasibility of squeezing 60 bands into any of the available spaces in the area; but the Square Festival seems to have done it. More than that they have provided a line-up that is diverse, interesting, different and exciting; combined with the brilliant, laid-back atmosphere that comes from the coast of Ceredigion this could be a worthwhile addition to the over-crowded festival calender.

With headline acts ranging from Alabama 3 (they did the Sopranos theme song) to indie-rockers The Crimea, Cardiff-based The Hot Puppies, Aberystwyth's own dance lunatics The Mighty FUOD, psychedelic popsters Radio Luxembourg and Australian drum and bass outfit Pendulum; there is an eclectic line-up that will have something for practically anyone. In amongst the pick-n-mix of other bands spread across the six stages are such acts as the delightful Super Cute Voices, camper-van troubadour Andy Hickie (accompanied by The Merry Maidens!?), the magnificently bonkers Son Capson (see previous post below for more on this guy), indie-popsters The Voices and The Spells and punk noisesmiths Smackrats.

Things are given an even more random edge by the presence of the Cabaret Stage in which the festivalgoers are invited to take part, you can exhibit any talent you may wish to show off which extends from singing to stand-up to poetry to humiliation.

And there promises to be a delcious assortment of food and drink, as well as arts, crafts, vintage clothing and a gaggle of other distractions to completely round out the weekend; not to mention the beautiful scenery of the Cardigan Bay coastline (weather permitting!).

£35 for the weekend including camping

Joy : News

There's been a few bits of news and line up changes with regard to a couple of Joy gigs this week so I thought I'd try and bring you up to date. Our next gig is on Thursday 31st July in Meze which was supposed to have been headlined by London's Lupen Crook and the Murderbirds. Unfortunately they've had to postpone and are now likely to headline our September date. I've managed to get the fantastic Threatmantics on the bill to replace them, they'll now be main support to Liverpool's The Moguls. The bill is completed by Holocene and Sofia. A full preview of this gig is on it's way.

In August we are putting on a gig in Mojo featuring co-headliners Tubelord and Blakfish, both are wonderful and both are right up Joy street. Think poppier At The Drive-In type stuff and you're in the right ball park. I'm hoping to get The Novocaines on the bill too but that's to be confirmed. This one is on Tuesday 19th August.

September is a work in progress but October's headliners are the brilliantly named Cats and Cats and Cats. I've been chasing these guys for ages so you'd better make the effort to come and see them! The supports for this keep splitting up, currently we have Kutosis pencilled in and another local band to be confirmed. Back to a Thursday for this but a week early on the 23rd.

All our Joy gigs are £4 on the door but if you get over excited you can get tickets in advance from Diverse Music for £3.50 including their booking fee.

Preview : Son Capson/Halflight @ Clwb : Sun 20th July

I know this is short notice but I've only just gone and listened to Son Capson's songs on myspace. Frankly he sounds nuts and should be fucking brilliant live. It's only 3 quid on the door and you get to see the wonderful Halflight supporting too. It's part of the Living Room series of gigs that Clwb has running and I'll do a bit more of a general piece about that very soon. This is what Mr Capson's website says but honestly, just go and listen to the songs here.

Son Capson is named after a depraved argosy that drifted off the western coast, afar from the rugged uplands of the Cambrian mountains. At that time, the ocean was a sluttish nightmare for the crew and their yahoo captain. But she was an imperious, perverse goddess that trampled on her bibulous clan if ever they weren't cut throat or bloody-minded enough, she could master our entire orbit. Albert Fish would of grieved in terror at the sight of her barbarity. They were brigands that pilfered the smorgasbord from every senile convention they rampaged. They had inherited the atavism of Nero. The captain and her bawdy sots fleeted to abbatoirs in the wilderness, when they did arrive at land. They relished amorously in malodours parlors and chambers there, where remains of cadaver's hung swaying on gilded sharply bent devices. An impurity washed the surroundings of these desolate butcheries for many days after, they went transient to the next to the next to the next. Today, Son Capson bolts the body of water and is the only ship possible, to remain lost out at the Lowland Hundred.

Preview : Silent Disco @ The Point, Cardiff : 26/07/08

SILENT DISCO (by Silent Arena)

By now, you should have an idea of what Silent Disco is all about. After all, The Point has now played host to two packed out events full of party-goers, decked out in matching headphones all dancing to a different and, to the outside world, completely silent beat. And praise be from those of us hard of hearing and voiceless from trying to make conversation over a loud PA, for Silent Disco returns to Cardiff this July for a midsummer party.

Once again, the cream of the crop of Cardiff's DJs will be in attendance to battle it out for your attention and your dancing shoes. Two DJs, side-by-side and you can choose which one you want to hear through your headphones. It's the only modern, democratic, choice-heavy way to party, you know?

Here's some information for those of you who are still confused by the concept of a disco that is silent! Upon entry to The Point, each disco-goer is handed a Silent Disco set of headphones. These headphones have a special button, enabling each person to switch between two sets of transmissions. On stage, a posse of DJs play tunes on two separate record decks. Flick between the two channels and you'll hear different DJs, different tunes. Look around and you'll see people dancing in bafflingly odd, disconnected ways. Occasional random cheers, singsongs and maybe even dance routines will break out across the dancefloor. Take the headphones off and all you'll hear is the stomp of dancing feet. A strange, funny and unforgettable experience.

There's more! Requests can be sent to the DJs by text and messages to mates and photos of happy silent dancers can be displayed on the big screen. Technology eh?

A refundable £5 deposit will be needed for headphone hire.

Saturday 26th July 2008, The Point, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay.
£7 Doors 9pm

Preview : The Adolescents @ TJs : 21/07/08

Middle Age Brigade present the following great bands in TJs on 21st July. Well worth checking out.

The Adolescents
Legendary American hardcore Punk Rockers the Adolescents reach are shores for the first time.
This is their only Welsh gig. There songs have been used on numerous skateboard DVDs Dirty Sanchez and Jack Ass TV to name a few. 1980s tuneful punk, in the same vein as Bad Religion, D.I, Black Flag and the Dead Kennedy’s.

Da Capo
Da Capo are a high-voltage, turbo rock'n'roll band from the south west of England, UK. With their energy-fueled live performances, now into the hundreds, UK radio performances and self-released CDs, Da Capo have earned a legion of dedicated followers.

"Da Capo are one of the hardest working rock...hardcore punk....punk...punk rock...rock'n'roll...stoner rock... (ask the drummer!) ...bands around, with countless gigs played in the UK and just back from a tour of Czech and Slovakia. So when the four lads from Bristol and Wales turned up to the studio on Sunday evening with two cars full of Marshall stacks, half a dozen guitars, a huge Gretsch drum kit and enough beer to keep Homer Simpson happy, I knew I was in for an interesting week. My speakers (and ears) took a pounding all week, guitars were down-tuned so low that only dogs and minke whales could hear the bottom strings, the re-cycling bin had to be emptied of beer cans every other day, Pot-noodle's yearly profits tripled and Kip turns into a trained MI5 assassin if you whisper the words 'do it again' into his left ear. The resulting super heavy guitar sounds, raw vocals, dirty bass and overdriven drums, which purposely sound retro and lo-fi in places, gel to give a modern edgy vibe to some great song writing and parallel the hi-energy impact the band have when playing live."
- Scott from DogHouse Studio.

Riot Squad
The new, five man line-up are continuing the hard work ethic with gigs up and down Great Britain, with plans to gig in Europe and America in the future.
The band are due to return to the studio to record a new vinyl EP, and hopefully a split single with homegrown and European bands. The bands are yet to be confirmed, but details of which will be posted when they get finalised.

Preview : Hypnotic Brass Ensemble @ Fiddlers, Bristol : 19/07/08

Brought to you by one of our favourite and most interesting promoters, Qu Junktions:

The now annual Qu J 'Summer Show' is going to deliver BIG time..with a nine piece brass band from Brooklyn leading the dance. The Hypnotic's are Mos Def's backing band with strong ties to Sun Ra and play a raw, energetic and powerful marching band show full of show stoppers, killer cover versions and exhilarating doses BIG band jazz, fanfare hip hop, street soul and pumping funk. June sees them release an album on Honest Jon's in anticipation of this there first UK tour proper.

In previous years this event has re-energised the summer with Konono No1, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Biosphere and Vialka. Always an event Bass Clef will be adding his trombone, effects and flags and then there will also be Zun Zun Egui adding their low beams, hi-life and underground rock n trance. With Qu DJs in tow this will be a night to remember. Like a street block party but inside.

Big brass bands are back in lots of flavours thihe nine piece band have proved to be one of the most exciting on the circuit with the energy of a street band coupled with the virtuosity of first class jazz. Although far removed from the New Orleans traditional marching band, HBE have soaked up this rich tradition then injected it with a street level hip hop sensibility and ability to WOW the audience. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble hit you between the eyes with their infectious sound.

The line up includes seven brothers, sons of the highly esteemed jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran whose career spanned radical developments in jazz through the 1960's and 70's. Cohran's career saw him appear in both the hugely influential Chicago bands Sun Ra Arkestra and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The influence of this internationally renowned movement plays its part in HBE, inspiring wilder improvisations and experiments with sound.

The band have captured hearts across the American continent and are starting their advance into Europe. Politically inclined rapper Mos Def brought HBE with him on his UK tour in 2007 where they stormed venues like 02 Arena. Their recent tour of Germany garnered critical praise and audiences that spanned hip hop to jazz via dub.

Supporting and also collaborating with HBE, is Bristol and now East-London based artist, BASS CLEF. Before the tour hook up was even on the cards Bass Clef must have dreamt up such a thing. From his school orchestra he learnt the joys of the trombone, his time at The Cube Cinema gave him a grounding in forward thinking electronics and strange/eerie effects and sound sources, then in New York once he made sure he check out the HBE. His own brand of bass heavy, dub inspired electronica has attracted doting followers across the grime, electro and dub scenes. His 2006 release A Smile is Curve that Straightens Most Things, was raved about across the board. Get on and get dirty with it.

ZUN ZUN EGUI hail from Bristol but are from everywhere. They make a hypnotic blare-out sound that is making a joyful noise. Very on the corner, off it's head and a blast. This is "tropicalism" but with a influence of Fugazi shaped rock edges, progressive thinkin' epicness and a heavy dose of Fela Kuti inspired eternal groove and East African guitar practise. This is where the wild music lives on.

Preview : Ove Naxx/Bogulta/Maruosa plus DJ Scotch Egg @ The Croft, Bristol : 17/07/08

Presented by The Croft and Qu Junktions:
Ya! A full on Japanese invasion of mental fusion. A club/gig - glug type of affair.

This showcase will grab your hair and pull it back to reveal 4 acts from Osaka re-manifesting themselves in front of your eyes. Heavy breaks, fuck-core dance, grinding metal, cartoon overload and mischievous elements make this....toxic stuff.

OVE NAXX
Full on fusioncore fluxed up. He fuses death metal, J-Pop, and dancehall with samples of Latin American music and farmyard animals. He's built up quite a rep in Europe for his live shows which ransack the house. Flowing jetblack hair is a common element on this tour!

BOGULTA
Nani (the incredible drummer, vocalist) & Shogo (the incredible mutant bass player / visual artist) come on like a dayglo Osaka version of Lightening Bolt. They play hard and fast combining some yet unseen sort of nu wave Osaka club punk aesthetic.. one of those unique, unforgettable, great fun, crazy live shows.

DJ SCOTCH EGG
Scotch Egg is hot again and in 2008 his new album is out on LOAD RECORDS. It's gameboy + boredoms style drums... really next level stuff.

MARUOSA
He is more sort of grindcore heavy mental breakcore... has a collab project with Bong Ra coming out later this year.
