2008 Review : Peter Newbitt (Joy DJ)

Recorded music highlights of 2008:
Albums:

1. Love, Ire and Song – Frank Turner
2. Angles – Dan le Sac vs Scroobious Pip
3. Hail Destroyer – Cancer Bats
4. Flight of the Conchords - Flight of the Conchords
5. Intimacy – Bloc Party

Singles:

1. Mercury – Bloc Party
2. Hometown Glory (High Contrast remix) – Adele
3. Kids – MGMT
4. Hip-Hop is Dead – Nas
5. Photosynthesis – Frank Turner

Live music highlight of 2008:
Without a shadow of a doubt, 2000 Trees Festival in Cheltenham. Some great bands, some rubbish bands and lots of local cider made this my favourite live experience of the year. Good sets particularly from Frank Turner, Chris T-T, Ghost of a Thousand, Danny and the Champions of the World and Morning Bride.

What else in 2008:
Cardiff City breaking the mould by being good and getting to the FA Cup Final, discovering Antipodean comedy (Flight of the Conchords and Summer Heights High) and losing my social life to Far Cry 2 on the Xbox 360.

2008 was...
...the year that I discovered the genius of the Wire.

2009 will be...
...thrifty.

Am I being biased as they've played Joy? They have played Joy but people far more important that me are starting to sit up and take notice.

The Ash & The Oak is the name under which Simon Leighfield performs and records. A singer of rare delicacy and grace, Simon plays irregularly and erratically around South Wales. The first time I saw them it was Simon and Rachel (although mysteriously she doesn't appear on their press release - maybe I've just fucked up their Bon Iver-esque back story), they played gentle acoustic folk and were very nice.

Since then they've put together a full live band and their sound has become a lot more interesting. It's still Simon's baby and he records all his music in a small room piled high with dysfunctional musical ephemera and defunct technology. Using these primitive means, he has recorded and released his eponymous first album, first as a digital download and, as of 22nd Sept 2008, a very limited edition physical 3 dimensional release on Country Mile Records (who released the John Langford tribute CD and should be releasing what promises to be a fucking awesome debut album from Cardiff's Jimi Alexander & The Satellites early next year). It's available in both Diverse and Spillers.

Determined to translate the sounds and arrangements he hears in his head into real life, The Ash & The Oak’s performances usually involve a coterie of friends and a trestle table of almost-in-tune musical instruments. It's telling that Blitzen Trapper are the first band in their myspace site's top friends because they do now share a certain sound with the Sub Pop band. Not so much the crackers stomp along tunes but certainly the multi-instrumental, layered vocal, oddball acoustic, dreamy west coast psych/country type tunes.

Two tracks from the album were chosen as September 2008’s single of the month by Kruger Magazine and have gained Radio 1 airplay. Huw Stephens has played the band a lot and handily has his own festival to put them on at. If only we could all do that.

Local? Cardiff based but Neath and St Albans
Am I being biased as they've played Joy? Yeah, a bit. They're a cracking live band though and well worth checking them out (although if Ceri beats me at Facebook pool once more I'm taking this blog down).

Threatmantic stepped in at rather late notice to headline July's Joy. We weren't disappointed. At times the band are bracket with folk but in truth use of Heddwyn's viola sounds more like dEUS playing Suds & Soda than some hippy nu-folkies. They occasionally sing in Welsh but it makes not a jot of difference. They sound (and occasionally look) like Future Of The Left backing Euros Childs. Their new single 'Big Man' was released on October 13th and the debut album 'Upbeat Love' was released this week on Double Six Records.

Now the factual bit. Threatmantics are a rock and roll band. They are not quite like other rock and roll bands. This is mainly and probably due to their lead guitar being a viola and their drummer and keyboardist being the same person. At the same time.

Heddwyn and Huw (brothers) hail from the Neath Valley in South Wales, Ceri hails from St Albans. They met in a lay-by on the A470 and after some awkward coughing and shuffling about they shook hands and decided to form a band.
Sometimes… that’s just how it happens.

They had released two singles before Big Man (Don’t Care - on the Ciwdod label - and Sali Mali - on AM) telling tales of ugly, lovely, dirty places and thoughts of joy, unruly body-hair and the sweet consolation of loose-fitting trousers.

Originally a demo, then an EP, then a mini-album, Upbeat Love sure has grown up fast. From the lusty conception, the excitement of the birth, the awkward adolescence to now - finally leaving the nest to find a new home in other people's homes. After a lengthy delivery, spread over three separate sessions, all present were pleased with the result – a short, sharp 8-track album packed to the brim with skuzzy, mind-blowing rock and roll.

Place: Howard Gardens
Bill: The Boy Least Likely To, Aidan Smith, Connan Mockasin, It Hugs Back, The New Tea Party
Myspace Genre: Acoustic/Indie/Other
Influences: Of Montreal, Daniel Johnston, The Shins, Belle & Sebastian, Jeffery Lewis,

Local? Yes, Cardiff
Am I being biased as they've played Joy? Of course.

Another money where my mouth is band. They opened up Joy in August '07 and the bastards all wore Spillers t-shirts (except Graf - thanks). It's a good job they played when they did as there's loads of the little buggers and they wouldn't all fit on the Meze stage these days.

They're are made up of 8 to 20 people from various Cardiff bands (Gindrinker, Hornby Pylons, Silence At Sea, occassionally Los Campesinos! to name but a few) playing instruments ranging from guitars & stylophones to violins & dustbin lids. Their songs are short and sweet - and smell slightly of twee. Boy&boy&girl&girl vocals and interlaced melody layers hide the subdued and often morose lyrics.

Their live show involves eight core Mys - supplemented where possible with up to 12 other 'satellite' members, the results have been described as like walking into a primary school music lesson... only the teacher is dressed as a bear and a cat is playing guitar!

Little My have so far released two 3" e.p.s on 'weepop! records' plus one on USA lable 'little pocket records' and are due to release a new 7" e.p. with weepop! this November, to celebrate they are going on their first ever tour around the UK , including this date at Swn.

Preview : Joy presents Cats And Cats And Cats and much, much more @ Meze : Thursday 23rd October

October's Joy is shaping up to be an absolute stormer. 5 acts (plus Eggsy GLC guest DJing) over 2 floors, Dancefridge being launched in the new upstairs room. Free badges as usual and hopefully some cool visuals filling the screens. 4 quid on the door, less if you're a student. Here's a bit of info on the acts that are playing:
Downstairs @ Joy

Cats And Cats And Cats
The good ship cats began its stubborn voyage in early 2005 with three stowaways: Benjamin, Thomas and Douglas imagining a place called Victorialand. One night Captain Lee Richardson stumbled across their plans in the cargo hold, instead of getting furiously angry he decided to work with the migrants on realising their plans. By June Victorialand was built and the crew were very pleased with its angular mountains and calm shores.

Ever restless, the trio explored their island and soon found two inhabitants hiding in the swamps, Adam and Eve. Already these two had been seen mending the canyons and planting crops so they were asked to join the cat’s vessel making their numbers up to five. Soon it was time to move on from Victorialand and the five set their sights due north to where the wind was singing a song of drunken sorrow. On the way the cats made their plans for their new home, a more spacious, diverse and fertile land than the one they had left. The captain once again followed their plans and witnessed the cats create their second island home. On the eve of the opening festival they decided to perform a musical introduction to the island. Captain Lee Richardson taped the performance into the horn of his gramophone hat. He put the copy into an envelope marked “to the real world” and tied it to the leg of a carrier pigeon and let it fly off into the sunset. We’re waiting.

One of the more excellent post rock outfits around, Cats and Cats and Cats put you in mind of a Mogwai or Mew that likes flowers and pretty girls in red dresses and such - Drowned In Sound

A band clearly forging their own path, regardless of scenes or trends. Intense, melodic, out-there. - Play Music

High quality, quirky songs with inspired lyrics and unbounded ideas. - Spill

Juffage
Juffage is a one man tape looping wizard who come all the way from Chicago, it's onlt fair I let his city's press do the write up:
Jeff T. Smith, the solitary artist behind Juffage, appears to take pride in the experimental nature of his music... but the songs streaming on the site are far from inaccessible. "Requiescat" lopes along on a fuzzed-out bass line and tribal drums; "Drone," an eerie, nightmarish soundscape, sounds like a tape salvaged from humanity's final days on Earth; "Cubicle Blues," with its slurred vocals and kinetic drumming, is the sound of one man struggling to keep pace with the frenetic world around him. Try to keep up. - Andy Downing, Chicago Tribune

Kutosis
These Cardiff based boys (Jim is Newport born and bred though!) make quite the racket. Angular, loud and thrashy they're the ideal band to open our night with a bang. Their track Control Control is featured on the compilation This Town Ain't Big Enough For The 22 of Us (available on Twisted By Design) alongside other Joy favourites Stray Borders, Gindrinker and Little My. They recently recorded a live introducing session for the Bethan Elfyn show on BBC Radio 1 in which they mention Joy, thumbs up for that guys. The YoYo demo has been featured on Huw Stephens' In New Music We Trust show and 6Music's Tom Robinson and their demo Control Control has been played by Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1 and 6Music.

Kutosis have played with Babyshambles, Victorian English Gentlemens Club, Apes, French Toast and Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Here's what some people say:

"Kutosis' debut single gobs in our faces with angular snorting punk-pop. " ****/5
Buzz magazine review of Vultures

"Angular and angry from the get-go ... killer hooks and a confrontational attitude"
Planet Sound

"God I just love this. Frantic, energetic brash guitars stab and slice and probe, almost masking the impassioned vocals that could be raging about media mind control, fascist government control or the TV remote control"
REPEAT fanzine review of Control Control

"I think I might get the train to Cardiff ... Genius"
6Music's Tom Robinson on "Barbie Hips"

DJs
Regular Joy DJ Pete plays his usual mix of hardcore, drum and bass, indie, punk, hip hop and Boston downstairs from doors opening at 8pm until midnight. Dancefridge's DJ Vernon Tessio then takes to the decks playing all sorts of electro pop, rock and dance until 2am.

Upstairs @ Dancefridge

Evils
Just before his performance at Cardiff's Swn Festival, The popular, Evils very kindly pays a visit to the Meze Lounge. His infectious mix of glitch beats, melodic bleeps and synthetic blips is not only challenging at times but also manages to adequately take control of all your muscles and pulsate them through his entire live performance. He also plays in a wendy house. Evils is not to be missed!

Plyci
Another of Cardiff's electronic talents hits Meze town. Plyci makes electronic music by himself and has had one single out. Over the past year he has played many gigs around Wales, along with playing a live set at Huw Stephens Swn festival. Plyci has also had radio play on Radio 1 and Radio Cymru. He is currently working on a New E.P. by the name of Fingers Crossed. If you like Evils, you're going to love Plyci!
Song to listen out for, 'Schwifty' but don't take my word for it, come listen for your self.

DJ Eggsy (GLC)
If you're from Newport then you're going to know all about Goldie Lookin Chain. Nut job stoner rap collective main man Eggsy, runner up in celebrity The Weakest Link no less, spins some of his favourite records between bands in the Dancefridge room for your enjoyment.

All of this somehow only costs you 4 quid on the door and we even give the first hundred a free badge. We're a bit crazy but in a lovable way.

Video : This Town Needs Guns : Panda

Another band from the Big Scary Monsters label (Blakfish, Tubelord, Cats & Cats & Cats). I love this label and have got a bit of a promotional end on the go in Diverse if anyone wants to check some of their catalogue out. This Town Needs Guns play a Kruger night in Clwb next month about a week before Cats & Cats & Cats (who they released a split CD with) play Joy in Meze Lounge. Before then though, you can have a look and listen to this.

Preview(s) : 2 gigs in Clwb : Micah P Hinson (upstairs) & Yacht (downstairs) : Tuesday 2nd September

OK, this is either a very good or very bad night depending on your ability to afford to pay for both and run up and down stairs.

We'll start upstairs where P4 Music present Micah P Hinson.
Micah P Hinson has known trouble. Raised in Abilene, Texas, as a teenager he became addicted to painkillers. In early 2000, he was caught forging prescriptions and sent to county jail, losing his car, his home, his money and all his possessions. By the age of 20, Hinson was a bankrupt ex-con, living in a motel and working in telemarketing. But as news of this gifted singer-songwriter began to spread on the strength of his 2004 debut album, …And The Gospel Of Progress, a tap on the back from a friend on a night out bizarrely resulted in a dislocated vertebrae – and more pain medication. …And The Red Empire Orchestra – his latest and greatest collection of sparse, yet beautiful country songs, delivered in his inexplicably timeworn burr – is the record that almost wasn’t.

The now-27-year-old returned from touring his second album …And The Opera Circuit, with chronic back pain from complications to his slipped disc and worsening health. Afterwards, it was clear something had to give – Hinson returned to Austin, Texas with plans to take a year off, writing new songs occasionally in between visits to doctors. As time passed, Hinson began contemplating his next move; the life of a touring musician was becoming a memory and, though he was concerned about losing his public, he was unsure when – or how – to make the next move. One day, a letter arrived from producer / engineer John Congleton (The Polyphonic Spree, Explosions in the Sky, Black Mountain, Antony and the Johnsons) expressing interest in working with Hinson, and it proved to be a pivotal moment for the Texan trouble man. “This letter pulled me out of the rut I had found myself in,” says Hinson. “Once I got this letter, something felt right and I knew the calling was there.” The artist and the producer started talking about how to proceed, agreeing to meet up for a week in Carrollton, Texas, where they pieced together ideas using recordings Micah had made during his year off as the basis for a new album. “In my mind, it was a strange experience,” says Hinson. “I wasn't used to being told whether I was doing a shit job or not. I would be in the booth, trying my damnedest to make a good take, and here would be this man in my earphones saying, ‘Ah hell, you can do better than that, I really didn't believe you there.’ It was a good thing. It felt as if we were making this record out of clear and pure intention.”

The album was finished in another week and a half, this time in Oak Cliff, Texas, in a studio built in a converted funeral home. Strings are an integral part of Hinson’s sound, but here was a problem: Hinson’s regular arranger Eric Bachman was unavailable, so they relied on Congleton’s contact book, recruiting members of The Polyphonic Spree, The Paper Chase and The Drams and a veteran of the opera circuit Nick Phelps. “These characters came in over the length of a few days and they proceeded to destroy my songs,” says Hinson. “I knew in my heart that we had something on our hands. The Red Empire Orchestra had finally turned into a proper monster, which in my mind, needed to be reckoned with.” It’s here, then, that we find Micah P. Hinson in 2008, confidence restored and life back on track – he even proposed to his girlfriend live on stage at Islington’s Union Chapel in December 2007. The wedding took place at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene on 6th April 2008. “Damn right I am happy. I have won! the race is over! I truly have found the love of my life and a woman who loves me unconditionally!” “I find myself ready to take on the world again, and show them what I have up my sleeve,” he says.

Support comes from the wonderful Absentee who I witnessed opening the first End Of The Road festival. If lovetorn tunes and baritone vocals are your thing (do you flick between Leonard Cohen and The Tindersticks on your itunes?) then you'd best get there early.

Doors 7:30pm | £9.50/£10.50. Tickets for this one available in Diverse for the people of Newport. Spillers in Cardiff and probably somewhere online for those of you that hate record shops.

And now on to downstairs where Shape Records are putting on an equally good show. Headlining is Yacht.

YACHT is a lot of things. It’s kind of a band, but it’s mostly a genre-and-media-spanning life project founded and led by Jona Bechtolt of the Northwest’s very own Portland, Oregon. Bechtolt (and new member Claire L. Evans) make anthemic power jams, play them backwards and soak them in nearly-psychedelic cherry cola. YACHT’s heart is the shows: uncluttered, inspiring sessions of damaged dance moves and synchronized crowd-waving, backed by constantly changing elements -- PowerPoint presentations, audience Q&A sessions, and shamanistic video environments.

Support comes in the form of The Jelas and Zissou. A special mention to Zissou as they've played at Joy twice and I've really enjoyed them on both occasions. Think quirkly, upbeat indie pop, Flaming Lips being possibly the most mainstream reference point I can think of. Again, get there early. In fact, always go to gigs early, you're paying your money, go see as many bands as you can!!
