Short notice for this, but if you’ve had yer local band ear to the ground, you may have been looking forward to it for a while now anyway. Family gigs at Tommy’s Bar always hold the promise of good atmosphere and decent booze (Joy Collective endorses Old Rosie cider) and this one has the added attractions of a Gindrinker side-project plus extra rollingaroundonthefloorness. Details follow:
The Family Presents…
KASMs
Kutosis
Stranglin’ Billy
+ DJs The Joy Collective
KASMs:
“London four-piece the KASMs have been described as “new goth”, but have far too pronounced a sense of fun to fit the mould. Their melodramatic music has the imperious sheen of Siouxsie and the Banshees, but singer Rachel Mary Callaghan is no ice maiden, preferring to hurl herself to the floor in the midst of a rag-doll dance or stage pretend assaults on photographers and members of the audience. They most closely recall the confrontational art-punk of X-Ray Spex, and, even if their harsh rhythms prove too atonal for mainstream success, Callaghan’s antics should win plenty of fans at this summer’s festivals” Live Review – Ian Gittins The Guardian,
“Droning, feedback-laden guitars, pulsing beats and a messy yet tight aesthetic, the reverb-heavy, almost surf-punk tones are offset by raw and at times painfully high pitched vocals by miniscule frontwoman Rachel Callaghan, who writhes and tears her way through the set with seemingly unstoppable energy. A dynamically engaging performance” Rachel Kellehar – Drowned in Sound
Joy Collective says: increasingly, a fun way to check out new bands is to Google image search them. Kasms results are all people rolling on the floor = good times.
Kutosis
Frantic, energetic brash guitars stab and slice and probe, almost masking the impassioned vocals that could be raging about media mind control, fascist government control or the TV remote control”
REPEAT fanzine review of Control Control
Joy Collective says: Saw these last year. Far too good looking to be honest.
The recently named Stranglin’ Billy amplify No Wave Caerdydd Psycho-billy sounds towards crimson coloured breeze block walls. 18 months in the making the four piece will self-destruct on stage at this, their first ever gig happening. Fronted by Mr DC Gates of Gindrinker fame, and former members of, Victims of Convenience, The RBB and The Prowse Desire.
“Well, you’re getting a bit better!” Pete – security / tour manager
Joy Collective says: First and last gig, apparently. Look out.
This gig will also feature the debut DJ skills of the Joy Collective team, or at least two of them. Er, look out.
