Dusty teardrops unblocked dirt cheap. Last time Deer Park played Cardiff, supporting the smart Singing Adams, their middle band set was enough to move at least two members of the audience to reach for the hankies. And that was only a solo set, from lead crooner Mark Grassick. Deer Park’s brittle, lovelorn countryfolkcana tugs at that muscle in your chest, and will quietly floor you. As always, kudos to Gathered In Song for continually bringing the musical goods to South Wales – a click in their website‘s direction will bring you news of other forthcoming treats, and is the least you can do.

Friday 7th October 2011
Gathered In Song presents…

DEER PARK

Deer Park is a London based collective based around Dublin born singer/songwriter Mark Christopher Grassick. Since the release of their self titled debut album which Diverse Music placed in their best of 2010 lists (Matt named it his album of the year), Deer Park have played shows all around the UK with bands like Cracker, Singing Adams, The Acorn, The Cave Singers, Elliott Brood, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Simone Felice, Dan Mangan, The Fruit Bats, Otis Gibbs, Paul Simon’s son Harper Simon and many others. London shows have included The Luminaire, Borderline, Windmill, Social, and several outings at americana/country nights like Come Down And Meet The Folks, What’s Cookin’ etc. Deer Park’s debut album was recorded in London by Paul Hollingsworth, mastered in the US by Billy Stull (Midlake, Okkervil River) and featured guest appearances from members of Woodpigeon, The Oxygen Ponies and Stagecoach.

“This is ramshackle, folky rock…an enjoyable ride – as rough round the edges and tumultuous as life itself” The Line Of Best Fit

“Gorgeous, pensive and perfect at the same time.” The Ruckus

“A powerful force for good” Americana UK

THE WHISKEY PRIEST

The Whiskey Priest is Austin, Texas based songwriter Seth Woods and his band. They funded this tour via a Kickstarter campaign fuelled by the backing of well wishers who appreciated that his songs are amongst the best out there and well deserving of a first UK tour. We’re delighted to oblige with a show in Newport.

“Only Richmond Fontaine do this kind of thing better” R2 – Rock ‘n’ Reel
“If 2008 belonged to Bon Iver, then The Whiskey Priest deserves 2010″ Black Plastic
“‘Wave and Cloud’ deserves your attention at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate genuine musical talent and emotional honesty in singer songwriting” Americana UK

STIV CANTARELLI

Enlisting the full roster of Richmond Fontaine as his backing band for excellent recent album Innerstate (it also features Willy Vlautin on vocals on one track and is released on Richmond Fontaine’s own label El Cortez Records), Stiv has created an album that above all recalls latter day Replacements songs like Sadly Beautiful and All Shook Down. It’s reflective, atmospheric and absolutely pretty special. Stiv’s old garage band Gold Rust played a show for us a few years back but we’re excited to see this new line up play songs from this great underground album.

Thanks to the good folks at Le Pub this show will be free entry.

Doors open 8.00pm

Okay, maybe not strictly alt-country in every sense. Yer ace sweetheart promoters Gathered In Song normally prove champs at bringing top drawer Americana, folk and country acts to South Wales; Laura Stevenson and band have elements of all these but also stir in sparkling indie and sprawling, multi-headed pop moves. There’s a crispness and refined classiness to proceedings that threatens but doesn’t quite teeter into tweeness, something possibly helped by the band’s time in previous punk and rawk bands (Bomb The Music Industry, Latterman, Get Bent). They’ll win you over, you unclassy fucks. Intriguing and worth-getting-there-early-for support too from Personal Best, aka Katie Gatt of unassuming local winners Bedford Falls.

Rivers of whisky over at the Pot Cafe, courtesy of a grizzly bearded middle-aged man (someone should totally invent a name for that style of facial hair that tapers to two or more seperate points – ‘the garden fork’?). Otis Gibbs plays socially aware acoustic laments that come complete with cracked-rocks vocals and heaped kudos from Billy Bragg. A pretty fine wit on the Twitter too. Support here is the comprehensively great hushed folk of Gareth Bonello, soothing ears as the Gentle Good.

And also, grrr, on the same night is the first cinematic choice of Music Geek Monthly, who huddle into Cardiff’s Arts Institute every four weeks to evaluate new releases and dig on classic albums (they also run full length LP listening events at Chapter). Hopefully something that will begin a sequence of film treats, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is the 2002 documentary covering Wilco’s travails (label problems, bands squabbling, migraines, other fun stuff) around their ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ record. A grumpy grump Jeff Tweedy may be, but I will punch anyone who dismisses ‘Being There’. That is all.

Why are these events all on the same day? Blame… someone.

LAURA STEVENSON AND THE CANS plus support at 10 Feet Tall, Cardiff

Monday 12th September 2011 – 20:00
Gathered In Song in association with 10 Feet Tall present…

LAURA STEVENSON AND THE CANS

The playful indie pop jangle of Laura Stevenson and The Cans should appeal equally to fans of Rilo Kiley and Laura Veirs, sitting somewhere between the two but bringing in a host of other elements to tap into a sound of their own. Laura Stevenson was schooled in the traditional music of her grandfather and grandmother (composer of “The Little Drummer Boy” and vocalist for the Benny Goodman Orchestra respectively) from an early age. It wasn’t until she started performing with Bomb The Music Industry in her teens, that she began writing on her own. Privately crafting songs on the softer side of indie rock and traditional folk, Stevenson was soon tapped as the band’s opener and, with the addition of Mike Campbell (ex-Latterman) and Alex Billig in 2007, Laura Stevenson and the Cans solidified. Their live band grew into a quintet, often times swelling to eight members, and the following debut LP, A Record, won them fans far and wide having been downloaded over 25,000 time since it’s 2008 release.

Sit Resist, an album centered around never sitting stagnant, sees a matured band that has been continuously at work writing, arranging and touring for the past three years. Lyrically, Stevenson’s pen has a sharp, poetic tone, making it impossible not to be taken in by her stories. Where A Record crackled with Stevenson’s intimate voice alongside gentle acoustics, begging the listener nearer, Sit Resist commands the attention of all within earshot with its rich instrumentation and textured melodies.

Over the course of the album’s thirteen songs, you’ll hear the band weld a variety of musical styles that dreamily caress and nurture one another into a wholly unique rendering of Americana. “Master of Art” with its Phil Spector-esque, girl-group tease of an intro, explodes with the energy of Stevenson’s voice – an instrument that is as strong as it is lovely. “Caretaker” conjures up ghosts and memories of homes inevitably / regrettably left behind. You’ll find major-key resolution in the juxtaposed tale that is “The Healthy One,” and “I See Dark” waltzes you, dear listener, into the lonely night, hand-in-hand.

“Laura Stevenson and The Cans prove it’s possible to fuse melody, thoughtful acoustic music and punk without compromising their sound. The resultant material is as phenomenal as it is undone. They’ve created a new genre for a new generation; an important development given the music industry’s tendency to rely on previous successes. Though The Cans’ style has not been covered before, their lyrics draw influence from the macabre, tongue-in-cheek lick of The Decemberists, and Stevenson’s vocal is not dissimilar to a matured Lisa Mitchell. Bound with ferocious and urgent intent, The Cans are an essential addition to your record collection” The Line Of Best Fit

“Brooklyn’s Laura Stevenson & The Cans make the good kind of indie rock: the beaming, soaring, cloud-gazing, theatrical kind; the nu-sensitivo version of ‘all killer no filler’.” The Village Voice

“On Sit Resist, there’s simply too much talent to not take notice.” Alternative Press

http://laurastevenson.tumblr.com/

Tickets are available for £5 from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/125262. This will more than likely sell out, so book early to avoid disappointment!

To celebrate Cardiff’s autumn re-awakening, we’re delighted to welcome the wonderful singer-songwriter talent of Otis Gibbs. With a gravelly voice conjuring images of his Indiana home, some people refer to him as a folk artist, but that is a simplistic way to describe a man who has planted over 7,000 trees, slept in hobo jungles, walked with nomadic shepherds in the Carpathian Mountains, been strip-searched by dirty cops in Detroit, and has an FBI file. Having toured the UK extensively both as a support to Billy Bragg, and on his own, we’re very lucky to have him!

Check him out at his website:
http://www.otisgibbs.com/

Kicking off proceedings will be an act with a distinctly local flavour, The Gentle Good. Riding the crest of a wave, and after a summer of festival gigs including Green Man, local favourite The Gentle good will surely be glad of a gig back in Cardiff. An absolute must see, one of the finest talents either side of the river Severn.

=====================================

Here it is, the first Music Geek Monthly music film night. The idea came up at a recent event about watching music related films and here is the first one. We have decided on ‘I am trying to break your heart’, a film about Wilco as this was the film that started the discussion. Depending on how this one goes, the plan is to have more of these events in the future. There are a list of films that have been compiled by Angharad and Laura on the tumblr page. Feel free to add more if you have any preferences, but it is likely that we will use this list as a means of selecting the film each time. Thank you both for doing the list (it’s pretty extensive!). The film will start at 8pm at Gwdihw and it is totally free. So come along if it sounds like something you would like to do!

Great booking. Sarabeth Tucek’s second album ‘Get Well Soon’ is nestling on the record shelves now, ready to be drilled into your heart. It’s a stark and beautiful mix of febrile guitar work, dusty AM radio rock and wracked acoustic songs, Tucek’s deceptively numb vocals rising ghost-like throughout. It’s spellbindingly good, and knowledge that it’s loosely based on the death of Tucek’s father only adds further layers of emotional charge. I’m almost grateful that I can’t go; the albums closing, title track makes me blub every time. Give it up for Gathered In Song’s tireless Americana promoting; don’t forget to give it up for unique, scarily good artists like Saraneth Tucek.

SARABETH TUCEK

A dark horse if ever there was one, US singer-songwriter Sarabeth Tucek has been likened to Cat Power, Nico, Natalie Merchant, Hope Sandoval and Karens Dalton & Carpenter. She’s inspired Laura Marling, toured with Ray Lamontagne and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and opened for Bob Dylan.

Tucek came to the attention of the indie scene whilst working with Bill Callahan on the album Goodbye Little Doll by EZT (i.e., singer/songwriter and occasional Will Oldham collaborator Colin Michael Gagon). She sung on the Smog album ‘ Supper’ and appeared in the rockumentary ‘Dig!’ which chronicled the relationship between The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. She co-wrote a number of songs with Anton Newcombe, released on BJM’s ‘We Are The Radio’ EP. The release included a track she wrote that Anton named ‘Seer’, later re-recorded by Sarabeth for her debut single, the stunning ‘Something For You’.

Much of her work, produced by Ethan Johns and Luther Russell, evokes memories of classic mid-seventies Neil Young.

Her own time has now surely come as she arrives in the UK to tour her second album ‘Get Well Soon’, out in April on the Sonic Cathedral label.

“an extraordinary voice that hovers intriguingly between Karen Carpenter and Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, borrowing occasionally from Neil Young’s hesitant vibrato and, yes, from Dylan’s ability to hurl half a dozen more syllables into a line than you were expecting” The Times

“The most beautiful single of the year” NME

“Amazingly accomplished” The Times

Entry on the door will be £7.00

Crane your necks, these tiddly gigs offer intimate thrills. Two dates for Mr Chew on either side of the Channel; two chances to catch a talented and scarily connected US troubadour. Hans is primarily a piano player, his, uh, distinctive fingerwork lending colour to ace psychers D. Charles Speer & The Helix, wiggy country teasers Oakley Hall, as well as playing with raga guitarist king Jack Rose. Clearly, just given these names, his solo stuff should be a feast. Kudos to Gathered In Song too for adding nutso and short anti folk gonk John Mouse to the Cardiff mix. Remember: no tall people at the front.

05/06/11 HANS CHEW + John Mouse – free entry show at Buffalo Lounge, Cardiff – 20:00

Friday 6th May 2011
Gathered In Song presents…

HANS CHEW

Having helped book a few dates for his tour we are happy to announce a South Wales show for the brilliant HANS CHEW following his appearance at Kilkenny Rhythm and Roots Festival…

Hans’ debut full-length solo record, Tennessee and Other Stories… made #21 in Uncut’s best albums of 2010 and #3 in their best Americana albums list

Hans is a conspirator to a number of parties unarguably guilty of music obsession. In addition to fronting his own eponymous band of sound fiends, he also plays honky-tonk piano for the psychedelic Americana group D. Charles Speer & The Helix, who have a full-length LP “Leaving the Commonwealth” coming out on Thrill Jockey records in April of 2011. Hans’s barrel-house and boogie piano can also be heard accompanying Dr. Ragtime himself, Jack Rose, on Jack’s 2009 release, The Black Dirt Sessions, and also on Jack’s posthumous 2010 Thrill Jockey release, Luck In The Valley. He’s also been known to perform with alt-Kraut-country rockers Oakley Hall. Hans currently lives in New York City. As well as the Uncut accolades, he has also had great press coverage from The Wire/Pitchfork/No Depression/Time Out etc.

“Sounds like early Elton John playing with The Faces” The Wire

www.hanschew.com

With John Mouse and Gathered In Song DJ set until 12.30am!

FREE ENTRY!!

Please note this show is at Buffalo Lounge on Woodville Road, Cathays, Cardiff CF24 4EA. It is NOT at Buffalo Bar on Windsor Place where we’ve run events before. (Same good people though) For more info see www.buffaloloungecardiff.com

=====================

Mothers Ruin

8the May, 8pm

Hans Chew (US)

Already an accomplished drummer, Hans honed his skills as a pianist while residing at the infamous Clermont Hotel in Atlanta, GA. His most distinctive influences are those of New Orleans pianists James Booker, Professor Longhair, and Dr. John, as well as classic American rockers Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Leon Russell, and the work of post-punk singer/songwriter Nick Cave. Hans performed his first solo show in August 2009 at the Cake Shop in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, opening for lo-fi psyche rocker Kurt Vile, and toured the US in February 2011. Hans is performing all three days of the Kilkenny Rhythm and Roots Festival in Ireland, April/May 2011, followed by a week of solo engagements in the UK.

Lonely Tourist

“It’s Little Richard on a Nick Cave trip, Floyd Cramer as The Night Tripper, or Leon Russell squeezed through a Jerry Lee Lewis pantyhose and collected in a burnt New Orleans spoon, sucked up and delivered in a James Booker-esque musical vehicle…”

Like a lot of cities, Newport on a Friday night might seem as terrifying as Joseph Ratzinger climbing through your window at night, gripping your uncompleted census form between his teeth. You need a bolthole, and this gig will provide shelter, cheap booze and, oh yeah, decent music too. You may have seen The Ash And The Oak on a number of occasions; their refined alt.country is constantly maturing, like a posh cheese that doesn’t laugh at willy jokes. They’re swish, trust us. Newer and younger bucks flesh out the bill, with the guaranteed quality promise that Gathered In Song always seems to provide. Look, they’ve put on this gig for free! And double look, they’ve just booked the great Sarabeth Tucek for May! Facts in your face.

Get yourself to Le Pub in Newport, Gwent on april fool’s day to catch a handfull of brill welsh bands – free entry. Honest! x

THE ASH AND THE OAK

Our favourite Welsh band for several years now, it’s about time we offered these fine purveyors of melancholy folky brilliance a well deserved headline show.

Indeed, Gathered In Song regulars should already be familiar with the band, but with their second album nearing completion hopefully this gig will provide some new songs to fall in love with. If you don’t know them, but like the music of Fleet Foxes, Elliott Smith or Vetiver, then quite frankly you’re in for a treat.

CHAILO SIM

Chailo Sim’s debut album has seen them garnering widespread attention, receiving significant airplay on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music over the last couple months from the likes of Huw Stephens, Jen Long, Tom Robinson and others. The band also completed a fantastic session for Bethan Elfyn’s show on Radio Wales.

Like some beardy meeting in plaid heaven, or the ‘Two Tribes’ video but more homoerotic, this gig brings a couple of excellent local promoters together for an evening to nourish your brain and that thing you call a soul. Gathered In Song are old hands at bringing fine quality Americana and its offshoots to South Wales; Balloon create drunken evenings where poetry and prose readings intersperse hand-picked live turns. No reason to think this’ll be anything less than brilliant: more stripped back and intimate than rocking and rolling, a blissed out Sunday treat with cheap drinks thrown in.

<img class="size-full wp-image-9480 aligncenter" title="Not the fish.
On Sunday 13th February, Balloon and Gathered In Song present a sort of Valentine’s celebration featuring two amazing bands from across the water, both playing as duos, one solo set from a local boy and readings from a Canadian and Mancunian that have both moved to Wales! This take place at Newport’s wonderful Le Pub.

DOLLY VARDEN
This fantastic double bill marks an overdue return to South Wales for husband and wife team Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen who have been singing, writing, and recording together for well over a decade. They’ve performed to capacity audiences and critical raves all over the U.S. and Europe as a duo, and with their band, Dolly Varden.

“It’s a gift to be able to do this” says Christiansen when asked how the couple manages to navigate the sometimes tense mix of creativity and marriage. “I couldn’t imagine life any other way”, echoes Dawson. “We’ve been singing together since the day we met”. In 1988 Dawson and Christiansen were asked by a mutual friend to add background vocals to a recording. Though they’d never met, they noticed that their voices effortlessly harmonized. Soon they were inseparable singing partners, and in 1990 they became husband and wife as well. In the early 90′s they co-led Stump The Host, a twangy rock band that packed them into Chicago area clubs. Then, in 1995, as the couple’s singing and songwriting found new depth and maturity, Stump The Host transformed into Dolly Varden, a new band named after an elusive species of trout. Dolly Varden has released four critically-acclaimed albums in the United States and Europe through Evil Teen Records and Undertow Music, home of American Music Club, Centro-matic, Jesse Harris, Bottle Rockets, David Bazan and more. Dawson has also released two critically acclaimed solo albums, the most recent, “I Will Miss The Trumpets And T he Drums” came out early in 2010.

“Electric-country majesty…when Dawson and Christiansen fly in close harmony you get a good idea of how Marshall Crenshaw and Lucinda Williams might sound in duet” David Fricke, Rolling Stone Magazine

“Songwriter Steve Dawson has an unerring capacity for finding the caveat in joy and desolation, in light and darkness. His voice thins and strains with compelling force; partner Diane Christiansen’s is here a fragile ache, there a soothing croon of reassurance; and when they sing together, the two create an entirely new whole. Dolly Varden continues to make pop music that is seductive, transcendent and peerless” Harp Magazine

MAGNOLIA SUMMER
Magnolia Summer is a St. Louis-based rock band that has a rolling cast of members who also do double time in other bands (such as Grace Basement and the Bottle Rockets). Centered around singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist, Chris Grabau, Magnolia Summer has released three records (via Undertow Music) to critical acclaim.

Over the years, Magnolia Summer has toured throughout the midwest, showcased in SXSW and CMJ. They have shared the stage with Matthew Sweet, Counting Crows, Cracker, The Minus 5, Grant Lee Philips, Glen Kotche, Bobby Bare Jr., Robyn Hitchcock, Ken Stringfellow, Ha Ha Tonka, Richmond Fontaine, the Bottle Rockets, and Will Johnson. Their newest record, Lines From The Frame (2009) is the first recording the band has completed in an outside studio.

In addition to the new record, you can also hear Magnolia Summer on the 3-CD compilation“Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs For 43 US Presidents” that features music by Mark Kozelek, Califone, Rosie Thomas, Bill Callahan, Xiu Xiu, Radar Bros., and Alan Sparhawk.

THE DOUBLECROSS
Opening the gig will be a short solo acoustic set from The Doublecross’ main player Jon Greenwood, a man so respected around the Cardiff area that he had more than 20 of Wales’ finest musicians play on his album Things Will Never Change. Springsteen, Hot Water Music, Evan Dando and Walter Schriefels influence his gruff, plaid coated acoustic tunes.

TYLER KEEVIL
Tyler Keevil grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He first came to the UK in 1999 to study English at Lancaster University. Since then, he has received several awards for his short fiction and filmmaking. His stories have appeared in a wide range of magazines and anthologies, including Interzone, New Welsh Review, On Spec, and Plant: The Welsh Internationalist. He lives in mid-Wales with his wife, Naomi, and lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire. His novel, Fireball, was published by Parthian in September.

MATTHEW DAVID SCOTT
Originally from Manchester, Matthew David Scott is a novelist and playwright now based in South Wales. He has published two novels: ‘Playing Mercy’, which was longlisted for the EDS Dylan Thomas Prize, and most recently ‘The Ground Remembers’, both with Parthian books. He has also had many short stories published in a variety of anthologies and magazines. As well as this, Matthew is a co-founder and writer for Slung Low, an award winning group of theatre makers based in Leeds.
What’s the ultimate thankless task? A quick internet search suggests it might be anything from busking in restaurants to being a football referee to defending the Holy Land. All well and good, but how many of those who’ve bleated about these or other burdens have tried booking regular top-quality, low-profile gigs in Newport in the last five years or so? Exactly. Gathered In Song continue to do this, while booking tours and arranging other events across South Wales; the fact that several of these events are free entry, this stuffed Saturday night bill included, makes them worthy of even greater props. It’s been said before here, but if you’re in any doubt check their pedigree over at http://www.gatheredinsong.com/ – you might not have heard of the artists on this bill, but if you’re in any way interested in alt.country, Americana, call it what you will, then you should be pretty happy here.

Texan DANA FALCONBERRY and Kentuckian MATT BAUER share more than the split single they’ve recently released; classic Americana themes of desolation and longing ring throughout both these singer-songwriters’ recordings, and both are undeniably reminiscent of more renowned performers. Falconberry’s tremulous Southern trill recalls Gillian Welch or Lucinda Williams, though her songs have a little of the glacial darkness of Nina Nastasia too. Bauer, meanwhile, looks impressively like Tim Harrington recast as a woodcutter, and has a feathery, whispered delivery not unlike Damian Jurado, Sam Beam of Iron & Wine or Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Not sure whether the two will team up on the night, though it seems likely; should be a treat either way.

Also on the bill are Dubliner Eoin O’Ruainigh, mercifully going by OH RUIN, a Green Man veteran with a campfire folkiness offset by some ornate, wordy lyricism, and JUDSON CLAIBORNE. Four turns for nought pence, or the price of a return train ticket to Cardiff. You might just find a gem.

Gathered In Song in association with The Local presents…

DANA FALCONBERRY

Dana Falconberry is a musical natural. Hailed by the Austin Chronicle as one of the city’s “most promising singer-songwriters” and “most arresting female vocalists,” her distinctive talents and singular creative vision find full and brilliant fruition on her two releases to date, Oh Skies Of Grey and Halletts, both of which provide a musical rainbow of stylistic splashes that range across folk, blues, jazz, Southern mountain music, ambient modernity and more.

“Extremely talented…[her] album has been in constant rotation around here all month.” Gorilla vs Bear

http://www.danafalconberry.com

MATT BAUER

Matt Bauer’s incredible music rings with the heavy gravitas of peers like Will Oldham or Damien Jurado. It is dark and atmospheric stuff. Some would call it bleak, yet it also manages to be compellingly addictive and somehow startlingly genuine and life affirming. Fans of Iron and Wine or Bon Iver will also find a lot to love in his creaking, banjo driven murder ballads and rustic appalachian leanings. Mariee Sioux, Alela Diane, Sarah Kramer and Jolie Holland are just a few of the collaborators on Matt’s amazing records.

“He’s channeling something heavy, preparing the rest of us for a darkness or beauty that we aren’t yet ready to receive. We believe Matt Bauer is a prophet.” Thrasher

“One of this year’s finest records” Muzzle of Bees

http://www.mattbauermusic.com

OH RUIN

Eoin O’Ruainigh’s story began in Dublin playing guitar for a string of bands (including support tours with Morrissey) before travelling to London, where he began writing solo songs. Crooning tales of childhood mischief and the first sweet stings of love, combining stomping blues with campfire quiet troubadour tunes. A little loose, a little rough around the edges, with melodies borrowed from old Irish folk songs, and stories set to intricate finger picked paeans. Eoin’s playing brought him guest appearances with Alberta Cross and Alela Diane who he played bass and guitar for touring the States and the UK in 2008. While honing his song writing craft, Eoin’s been learning the art of the luthier, making the guitar he now plays on.

JUDSON CLAIBORNE

“This reminds me of early Cass McCombs and also of a number of other things I can’t quite put my finger on right now. Perhaps even some Clientele. It’s really very soothing indeed. Television. That’s it. Tom Verlaine is in here. I love it. I am very glad to be bringing the act to the UK for the first time” The Local

“The music alone should satisfy your appetite; a lazy slice of Americana to ease the transition from daylight-saving time” Time Out Chicago

Entry is free. Doors 8pm.

So TJ’s In The Square went well then? Our Joy man was there and, inbetween DJing quality indie to 2000 people (AT LEAST), seemed to give the bleary thumbs up to the John Sicolo tribute day. It’s worth remembering though, amongst the whirl of reformed bands and charity fundraising, that there are still a small number of good people brightening up Newport’s music scene, one decent gig at a time. One such is Steve from Gathered In Song, someone who comprehensively knows his Americana onions, and hey, someone who’s bringing you this evening for frigging zero pounds. Deer Park will fill the plaid gap in your heart for sure, and if they’re being supported by a band who bring to mind ace country-psychers Skygreen Leopards as well, then SO MUCH THE BETTER. Yer headline band will also be making two further South Wales appearances: on the 17th in Cardiff’s Koko Gorillaz, and the day after in the same city’s Buffalo Bar, as part of a Truck festival warm up evening. It’s an agreeable bombing campaign.

A free show!!

Blending the ramshackle confessionals of Okkervil River and Bright Eyes, the energy and infectious melodies of The Hold Steady, the noisy indie rock punk clatter of The Thermals and the downtrodden, steel guitar laced americana of Richmond Fontaine, Deer Park are without doubt our favourite find of 2010.

From Dublin via London, and with members spanning the UK, the band (using the term loosely) are managed by Gilles Pugatch in New York who also manages Chris Mills and recent Bella Union signings Mountain Man. Their debut album was mastered by Billy Stull (Okkervil River, Midlake, Centro-matic) and features members of The Oxygen Ponies and Woodpigeon. The beautifully packaged artwork was done by Sub Pop’s Jesse Le Doux (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, The Shins, Elliott Smith etc).

Deer Park have recently played with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Acorn and Paul Simon’s son Harper Simon, which amply demonstrates their wide appeal.

Fans of The Mountain Goats, The National, The Replacements, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ryan Adams, Guided By Voices, Neutral Milk Hotel or anyone we’ve already mentioned need to come join the party.

“This is ramshackle, folky rock…an enjoyable ride – as rough round the edges and tumultuous as life itself” – The Line Of Best Fit
