Yes, look at all that event blurb below. So much blurb. The people in Science Bastard are so confident of people turning up to their album launch that precisely bum-all details have been attached to the FB event or Le Pub listing (bar a couple of embedded videos). Who are they? What music do they play? What do they think about the Eurozone crisis? To be honest, I can’t be arsed either: come to this, buy an album, buy a T-shirt, laugh at Vern, think about where your life is going, buy another album, go away. Sorry, home. It’s worth the entry fee.

Dusty teardrops unblocked dirt cheap. Last time Deer Park played Cardiff, supporting the smart Singing Adams, their middle band set was enough to move at least two members of the audience to reach for the hankies. And that was only a solo set, from lead crooner Mark Grassick. Deer Park’s brittle, lovelorn countryfolkcana tugs at that muscle in your chest, and will quietly floor you. As always, kudos to Gathered In Song for continually bringing the musical goods to South Wales – a click in their website‘s direction will bring you news of other forthcoming treats, and is the least you can do.

Friday 7th October 2011
Gathered In Song presents…

DEER PARK

Deer Park is a London based collective based around Dublin born singer/songwriter Mark Christopher Grassick. Since the release of their self titled debut album which Diverse Music placed in their best of 2010 lists (Matt named it his album of the year), Deer Park have played shows all around the UK with bands like Cracker, Singing Adams, The Acorn, The Cave Singers, Elliott Brood, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Simone Felice, Dan Mangan, The Fruit Bats, Otis Gibbs, Paul Simon’s son Harper Simon and many others. London shows have included The Luminaire, Borderline, Windmill, Social, and several outings at americana/country nights like Come Down And Meet The Folks, What’s Cookin’ etc. Deer Park’s debut album was recorded in London by Paul Hollingsworth, mastered in the US by Billy Stull (Midlake, Okkervil River) and featured guest appearances from members of Woodpigeon, The Oxygen Ponies and Stagecoach.

“This is ramshackle, folky rock…an enjoyable ride – as rough round the edges and tumultuous as life itself” The Line Of Best Fit

“Gorgeous, pensive and perfect at the same time.” The Ruckus

“A powerful force for good” Americana UK

THE WHISKEY PRIEST

The Whiskey Priest is Austin, Texas based songwriter Seth Woods and his band. They funded this tour via a Kickstarter campaign fuelled by the backing of well wishers who appreciated that his songs are amongst the best out there and well deserving of a first UK tour. We’re delighted to oblige with a show in Newport.

“Only Richmond Fontaine do this kind of thing better” R2 – Rock ‘n’ Reel
“If 2008 belonged to Bon Iver, then The Whiskey Priest deserves 2010″ Black Plastic
“‘Wave and Cloud’ deserves your attention at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate genuine musical talent and emotional honesty in singer songwriting” Americana UK

STIV CANTARELLI

Enlisting the full roster of Richmond Fontaine as his backing band for excellent recent album Innerstate (it also features Willy Vlautin on vocals on one track and is released on Richmond Fontaine’s own label El Cortez Records), Stiv has created an album that above all recalls latter day Replacements songs like Sadly Beautiful and All Shook Down. It’s reflective, atmospheric and absolutely pretty special. Stiv’s old garage band Gold Rust played a show for us a few years back but we’re excited to see this new line up play songs from this great underground album.

Thanks to the good folks at Le Pub this show will be free entry.

Doors open 8.00pm

Seems as though there’s long been a country element to Newport’s punk scene, or a punk element to its country scene. Either way, there’s a healthy cross-pollination that winds through the music of Jon Langford (amongst others), the releases of Diverse Records and the tireless promotional work of Gathered In Song. Bands like Columbus, Ohio’s TWO COW GARAGE are kind of a natural fit around South-East Wales, then. Fierce, ragged-voiced blue-collar country-punk (‘cowpunk’ always makes me wince for some reason) that can sound driven and impassioned but also has a laconic frustration with small-town America and small-time relationships, there’s plenty of examples online as to why they’re well worth the short train journey to Le Pub this Bank Holiday Monday. RIYL Richmond Fontaine, Replacements, Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr etc.

Cracking support bill too, high in quality but nicely varied. I shan’t try and second-guess whether DEER PARK will be a full band or just Mark Grassick solo, as was the case on the recent Singing Adams tour, but his bruised Americana and Dublin twang and witty, cutting lyricism are equally effective in stark solo mode. Reminiscent of Will Sheff or John Darnielle, neither of which are compliments to be bandied about lightly. Nestled in between those two with a nice stylistic left-turn are THE KEYS, who turn up all over the place in the next few weeks as they release Bitten By Wolves, a swift full-length follow-up to Fire Inside (which, it now seems, is deemed a mini-album; no mention of 2002′s debut). Lovely chewy psych-pop, sunny harmonies and British Invasion-timestamped tunes. Reliably untethered live, too. Nice to see Newport’s own LT. MEAT opening up; his splendidly deadpan patter and warped guitar n’ laptop surf-rock giddiness is top fun, so get there early for this and for the Daniel Higgs Trio show at 10 Feet Tall on the 28th where he’ll make a welcome return to Cardiff. Faultless line-up and cheap entry, let’s hope this one gets the local enthusiasm it deserves.

I hear a Two Cow Garage song, and I hear an unembellished, unapologetic story from a real day in a real person’s life. I hear about passions, dreams, determinations and setbacks. I hear about loneliness. I hear about relationships – some that work out, others that don’t. I hear about kids growing up in a dreary Anytown of mediocrity, resolute to break free of the mire that bogs their peers in dead-end lives. I hear about me. I hear about my friends. I hear about the wall against our back. And I can totally relate.

Though they spend far more days on the road — on their way from the last show, on their way to the next — than they do at home, Two Cow Garage hail from Columbus, Ohio. Among many locals (and visitors, for that matter), Columbus is known as “Cowtown.” This is because, according to guitarist/vocalist Micah Schnabel, “if you drive five minutes out of the city, any which direction, you’re gonna be in cornfields and cows and the whole deal.” Musically, Micah’s band plays a blaring, tight, nasty manner of…eh, let’s call it “podunk punk” for lack of anything better, that wouldn’t sound out of place shuddering the walls of a converted garage/practice space at the end of the cul de sac you just zoomed past on your way outta town. So, yeah, their name fits. But that’s insignificant.

The new, second album by Two Cow Garage is called The Wall Against Our Back. That’s significant, not just because it’s also the title of one of the album’s best songs, but because it describes the determination, in the face of obstacles aplenty, to rise above which informs so many of the album’s tracks. There’s no turning back. “I think that song just kinda wraps up where we stand right now — poor and busting our ass,” drummer Dustin Harigle says of the title track. “It’s amazing how fast you grow up when you don’t know where you’re gonna eat the next day.”

The trio’s debut album, 2002’s Please Turn the Gas Back On (poor and busting their asses back then as well, obviously) was written in the basement, while the members were just on either edge of age 20, before they had started touring, before they had quite gotten confident with their sound and their statements. Though a fine album, it was perhaps somewhat unrepresentative, tending to emphasize the band’s more countrified influences rather than the rawboned rock ‘n’ roll they crank out at their gigs.

The Wall Against Our Back was written mostly on the road, and it shows. Produced by Brent Best of Two Cow’s drinkin’ pals (and frequent tourmates) Slobberbone, their sophomore shot kicks in with the potent, scorched ‘n’ scarred ferocity that rarely translates outside of a go-fer-broke set at any night’s given dive. Musically, the songs are muscular but diverse, showcasing the many factions within Two Cow’s sound, while maintaining allimportant focus. And there’s a palpable, cocksure chemistry to the performances which can’t be faked – it can only be honed by night after night after night of slamming through your songs in front of pockets of otherwise distracted drunks who may or may not care if you’re even alive.

Two Cow Garage have made quite a reputation for being road warriors, touring like crazy (over 332,000 miles between two vans in about two years), not letting up, not getting discouraged. From my observations, a lot of bands at their level – after releasing one VERY independent CD — don’t put as much into that. They feel they need to hold on to their day jobs, or college, or relationships, etcetera… there’s always some excuse or reason holding them back. “All valid excuses!” Schnabel cracks. Sure, but the problem is, those bands then put their focus on playing the same old local clubs every other week or so, and usually get nowhere. Two Cow Garage were determined to not do that. Luckily, they found a huge fan early on in Chris Flint, a Columbus attorney who swiftly became the band’s manager and part-time guitarist, insisting that the Garage hit the road with a vengeance. But another factor lighting a fire under their asses was the threat of ending up back where they’d come from, like everyone else they grew up with.

Lancaster and Bucyrus are tiny Ohio towns where farming and manufacturing provide the primary economy. Lancaster, where Two Cow bassist/vocalist Shane Sweeney was raised, boasts a glass factory. In Bucyrus, where Dustin and Micah were childhood friends, it’s a ball bearing plant. “And there’s one person in every home who works there,” says 23-year-old Harigle. “My dad. Micah’s mom…”

“That was the inspiration for a lot of the band throwing ourselves so into it,” Sweeney, 25, pipes in. “Just wanting to do anything BUT go do that — end up in a factory five days a week for the rest of our lives.” Musically, not much cool or hip reached those towns, “so we had either our parents’ music to choose from, or the stuff on MTV,” says Schnabel, 22. “And I think all of us chose the stuff our parents listened to.” Which tended to be a mix of older country stuff, classic rock and, in Dustin’s case, a bunch of spandex metal power ballads. The latter genre has yet to seep its way into the Two Cow Garage musical stew, but of course there’s still plenty of time for that. This is a band unafraid to whip out the odd cover song or three during its sets. Typically, these run the gamut from Billy Joe Shaver’s “Georgia on a Fast Train” to Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” Neil Young’s ragged “Fuckin’ Up” and an absolutely smokin’ version of the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down.”

There are two cover songs on The Wall Against Our Back, but neither one was written by quite so prominent an artist. “Alphabet City” was penned by Todd May, formerly of Columbus alt-country hopefuls the Lilybandits and a songwriter who often finds backing by Two Cow Garage at his occasional gigs. And “Hillbilly” comes from another of Two Cow’s hometown buddies, Sean Beal, who once led a band called Big Back Forty, of whom Schnabel testifies: “When I was in high school, when I first found this kind of music, that was the band that made this music make so much sense to me. ’Cause it was real – it was very ‘where we’re from,’ you know. It was songs about where we’re from and where we grew up — it was about what was actually going on and happening. So I think he was a big influence on us. Probably one of the biggest. I love that song.”

The guys in Two Cow Garage have learned well from such examples. Their music is similarly very “where we’re from,” and very real. And while I can’t promise that you’ll relate as strongly as I do, I think there’s a good chance you will. Because, despite the overwrought ramblings about this new album that I’ve sputtered onto the page you’re grasping, The Wall Against Our Back is, when all is said and done, basically just a rockin’ little record full of all sorts of bitter revenge against all the assholes we went to high school with who always told us we’d never amount to shit, and all the girlfriends who’ve tossed us outta their apartment at three in the morning for no discernable reason, and all the pretentious dicks who’ll never appreciate the feel of a brand new July, and all the reasons you need to get up every day and bust your ass to prove them all wrong.

“Bingo!” confirms Schnabel, while Sweeney, accentuating the obvious, adds: “Isn’t that what all good songs are about?”

Like a lot of cities, Newport on a Friday night might seem as terrifying as Joseph Ratzinger climbing through your window at night, gripping your uncompleted census form between his teeth. You need a bolthole, and this gig will provide shelter, cheap booze and, oh yeah, decent music too. You may have seen The Ash And The Oak on a number of occasions; their refined alt.country is constantly maturing, like a posh cheese that doesn’t laugh at willy jokes. They’re swish, trust us. Newer and younger bucks flesh out the bill, with the guaranteed quality promise that Gathered In Song always seems to provide. Look, they’ve put on this gig for free! And double look, they’ve just booked the great Sarabeth Tucek for May! Facts in your face.

THE ASH AND THE OAK

Our favourite Welsh band for several years now, it’s about time we offered these fine purveyors of melancholy folky brilliance a well deserved headline show.

Indeed, Gathered In Song regulars should already be familiar with the band, but with their second album nearing completion hopefully this gig will provide some new songs to fall in love with. If you don’t know them, but like the music of Fleet Foxes, Elliott Smith or Vetiver, then quite frankly you’re in for a treat.

CHAILO SIM

Chailo Sim’s debut album has seen them garnering widespread attention, receiving significant airplay on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music over the last couple months from the likes of Huw Stephens, Jen Long, Tom Robinson and others. The band also completed a fantastic session for Bethan Elfyn’s show on Radio Wales.

Like some beardy meeting in plaid heaven, or the ‘Two Tribes’ video but more homoerotic, this gig brings a couple of excellent local promoters together for an evening to nourish your brain and that thing you call a soul. Gathered In Song are old hands at bringing fine quality Americana and its offshoots to South Wales; Balloon create drunken evenings where poetry and prose readings intersperse hand-picked live turns. No reason to think this’ll be anything less than brilliant: more stripped back and intimate than rocking and rolling, a blissed out Sunday treat with cheap drinks thrown in.

<img class="size-full wp-image-9480 aligncenter" title="Not the fish.
On Sunday 13th February, Balloon and Gathered In Song present a sort of Valentine’s celebration featuring two amazing bands from across the water, both playing as duos, one solo set from a local boy and readings from a Canadian and Mancunian that have both moved to Wales! This take place at Newport’s wonderful Le Pub.

DOLLY VARDEN
This fantastic double bill marks an overdue return to South Wales for husband and wife team Steve Dawson and Diane Christiansen who have been singing, writing, and recording together for well over a decade. They’ve performed to capacity audiences and critical raves all over the U.S. and Europe as a duo, and with their band, Dolly Varden.

“It’s a gift to be able to do this” says Christiansen when asked how the couple manages to navigate the sometimes tense mix of creativity and marriage. “I couldn’t imagine life any other way”, echoes Dawson. “We’ve been singing together since the day we met”. In 1988 Dawson and Christiansen were asked by a mutual friend to add background vocals to a recording. Though they’d never met, they noticed that their voices effortlessly harmonized. Soon they were inseparable singing partners, and in 1990 they became husband and wife as well. In the early 90′s they co-led Stump The Host, a twangy rock band that packed them into Chicago area clubs. Then, in 1995, as the couple’s singing and songwriting found new depth and maturity, Stump The Host transformed into Dolly Varden, a new band named after an elusive species of trout. Dolly Varden has released four critically-acclaimed albums in the United States and Europe through Evil Teen Records and Undertow Music, home of American Music Club, Centro-matic, Jesse Harris, Bottle Rockets, David Bazan and more. Dawson has also released two critically acclaimed solo albums, the most recent, “I Will Miss The Trumpets And T he Drums” came out early in 2010.

“Electric-country majesty…when Dawson and Christiansen fly in close harmony you get a good idea of how Marshall Crenshaw and Lucinda Williams might sound in duet” David Fricke, Rolling Stone Magazine

“Songwriter Steve Dawson has an unerring capacity for finding the caveat in joy and desolation, in light and darkness. His voice thins and strains with compelling force; partner Diane Christiansen’s is here a fragile ache, there a soothing croon of reassurance; and when they sing together, the two create an entirely new whole. Dolly Varden continues to make pop music that is seductive, transcendent and peerless” Harp Magazine

MAGNOLIA SUMMER
Magnolia Summer is a St. Louis-based rock band that has a rolling cast of members who also do double time in other bands (such as Grace Basement and the Bottle Rockets). Centered around singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist, Chris Grabau, Magnolia Summer has released three records (via Undertow Music) to critical acclaim.

Over the years, Magnolia Summer has toured throughout the midwest, showcased in SXSW and CMJ. They have shared the stage with Matthew Sweet, Counting Crows, Cracker, The Minus 5, Grant Lee Philips, Glen Kotche, Bobby Bare Jr., Robyn Hitchcock, Ken Stringfellow, Ha Ha Tonka, Richmond Fontaine, the Bottle Rockets, and Will Johnson. Their newest record, Lines From The Frame (2009) is the first recording the band has completed in an outside studio.

In addition to the new record, you can also hear Magnolia Summer on the 3-CD compilation“Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs For 43 US Presidents” that features music by Mark Kozelek, Califone, Rosie Thomas, Bill Callahan, Xiu Xiu, Radar Bros., and Alan Sparhawk.

THE DOUBLECROSS
Opening the gig will be a short solo acoustic set from The Doublecross’ main player Jon Greenwood, a man so respected around the Cardiff area that he had more than 20 of Wales’ finest musicians play on his album Things Will Never Change. Springsteen, Hot Water Music, Evan Dando and Walter Schriefels influence his gruff, plaid coated acoustic tunes.

TYLER KEEVIL
Tyler Keevil grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He first came to the UK in 1999 to study English at Lancaster University. Since then, he has received several awards for his short fiction and filmmaking. His stories have appeared in a wide range of magazines and anthologies, including Interzone, New Welsh Review, On Spec, and Plant: The Welsh Internationalist. He lives in mid-Wales with his wife, Naomi, and lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire. His novel, Fireball, was published by Parthian in September.

MATTHEW DAVID SCOTT
Originally from Manchester, Matthew David Scott is a novelist and playwright now based in South Wales. He has published two novels: ‘Playing Mercy’, which was longlisted for the EDS Dylan Thomas Prize, and most recently ‘The Ground Remembers’, both with Parthian books. He has also had many short stories published in a variety of anthologies and magazines. As well as this, Matthew is a co-founder and writer for Slung Low, an award winning group of theatre makers based in Leeds.
What’s the ultimate thankless task? A quick internet search suggests it might be anything from busking in restaurants to being a football referee to defending the Holy Land. All well and good, but how many of those who’ve bleated about these or other burdens have tried booking regular top-quality, low-profile gigs in Newport in the last five years or so? Exactly. Gathered In Song continue to do this, while booking tours and arranging other events across South Wales; the fact that several of these events are free entry, this stuffed Saturday night bill included, makes them worthy of even greater props. It’s been said before here, but if you’re in any doubt check their pedigree over at http://www.gatheredinsong.com/ – you might not have heard of the artists on this bill, but if you’re in any way interested in alt.country, Americana, call it what you will, then you should be pretty happy here.

Texan DANA FALCONBERRY and Kentuckian MATT BAUER share more than the split single they’ve recently released; classic Americana themes of desolation and longing ring throughout both these singer-songwriters’ recordings, and both are undeniably reminiscent of more renowned performers. Falconberry’s tremulous Southern trill recalls Gillian Welch or Lucinda Williams, though her songs have a little of the glacial darkness of Nina Nastasia too. Bauer, meanwhile, looks impressively like Tim Harrington recast as a woodcutter, and has a feathery, whispered delivery not unlike Damian Jurado, Sam Beam of Iron & Wine or Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Not sure whether the two will team up on the night, though it seems likely; should be a treat either way.

Also on the bill are Dubliner Eoin O’Ruainigh, mercifully going by OH RUIN, a Green Man veteran with a campfire folkiness offset by some ornate, wordy lyricism, and JUDSON CLAIBORNE. Four turns for nought pence, or the price of a return train ticket to Cardiff. You might just find a gem.

Saturday 29th January 2011
Gathered In Song in association with The Local presents…

DANA FALCONBERRY

Dana Falconberry is a musical natural. Hailed by the Austin Chronicle as one of the city’s “most promising singer-songwriters” and “most arresting female vocalists,” her distinctive talents and singular creative vision find full and brilliant fruition on her two releases to date, Oh Skies Of Grey and Halletts, both of which provide a musical rainbow of stylistic splashes that range across folk, blues, jazz, Southern mountain music, ambient modernity and more.

“Extremely talented…[her] album has been in constant rotation around here all month.” Gorilla vs Bear

http://www.danafalconberry.com

MATT BAUER

Matt Bauer’s incredible music rings with the heavy gravitas of peers like Will Oldham or Damien Jurado. It is dark and atmospheric stuff. Some would call it bleak, yet it also manages to be compellingly addictive and somehow startlingly genuine and life affirming. Fans of Iron and Wine or Bon Iver will also find a lot to love in his creaking, banjo driven murder ballads and rustic appalachian leanings. Mariee Sioux, Alela Diane, Sarah Kramer and Jolie Holland are just a few of the collaborators on Matt’s amazing records.

“He’s channeling something heavy, preparing the rest of us for a darkness or beauty that we aren’t yet ready to receive. We believe Matt Bauer is a prophet.” Thrasher

“One of this year’s finest records” Muzzle of Bees

http://www.mattbauermusic.com

OH RUIN

Eoin O’Ruainigh’s story began in Dublin playing guitar for a string of bands (including support tours with Morrissey) before travelling to London, where he began writing solo songs. Crooning tales of childhood mischief and the first sweet stings of love, combining stomping blues with campfire quiet troubadour tunes. A little loose, a little rough around the edges, with melodies borrowed from old Irish folk songs, and stories set to intricate finger picked paeans. Eoin’s playing brought him guest appearances with Alberta Cross and Alela Diane who he played bass and guitar for touring the States and the UK in 2008. While honing his song writing craft, Eoin’s been learning the art of the luthier, making the guitar he now plays on.

http://www.myspace.com/ohruin

JUDSON CLAIBORNE

“This reminds me of early Cass McCombs and also of a number of other things I can’t quite put my finger on right now. Perhaps even some Clientele. It’s really very soothing indeed. Television. That’s it. Tom Verlaine is in here. I love it. I am very glad to be bringing the act to the UK for the first time” The Local

“The music alone should satisfy your appetite; a lazy slice of Americana to ease the transition from daylight-saving time” Time Out Chicago

http://www.judsonclaiborne.com

Entry is free. Doors 8pm.

Why was this one of the best gigs of the year? Or, to put it another way, why go to gigs? There’s, what, 30 people here tonight, but all of them saw a night that variously included semi-nudity, sudden mental breakdowns, confused jamming, karate kicks and Belinda Carlyle. A normal night out in Newport you’re probably thinking, except in this case you get to see the effect a guitarist’s decision to go goggleshit bonkers three songs in has on his started bandmates.

And you probably think I’m talking about Strange News From Another Star here. But guess what: the Cardiff boys are their usual professional selves, though their chosen profession involves gold plated drunk banter about cock gloves as much as brilliantly tight garage rock. Despite singer/guitarist Jimmy Watkins’s plan to give the entire audience the lyrics foundering after only being arsed to write them out twice, opener ‘The Ballad Of John Rostron’ kicks all kinds of bum, screamed out intensity hitting muscular, speedfreak riffing. You can’t hear the lyrics anyway. The whole set is what happens when you burn through surreal word mangling, stand up comedy, heads down rocking and disturbing alcohol consumption, and they never let you down.

Jonny’s pissed off. Not because the mild mannered Science Bastard guitarist has already been called “the kid from Home Alone” from the stage tonight. It’s the lack of people. Plus, Jonny is a bit weird and hears sounds differently to other people, so that what sounds like fine clanging noise to everyone else resembles Autotuned cat buggery to him. After three songs, he’s had enough. The guitar gets thrown to the floor and half-volleyed into the waiting keyboard, while Jonny spins around and sinks his foot into the amps behind him. Then falls over. As do the amps. The look on amp-owner Jimmy Watkins’s face, as his thoughts run from “Rock and roll!” to “Hang on, I paid a grand for that”, redefines priceless. The rest of the SB set is like a cross between a roadie convention and hostage negotiation, as people swarm in to re-plug, test out, and pat Jonny on the head, carefully. The next song has the guitarist refusing to get up, issuing vocals while lying on the floor, a mic held to his mouth. It’s like Lee Mavers holding a political protest. The gaps between songs stretch to Pinter lengths. The crowd shout “What’s he on?” and, strangely, “I’m not a lesbian”. At one point, five people from the audience play keyboard. Then Jonny decides to play his guitar parts on the keyboard. It sort of works, fevered post-hardcore guitar noise being adaptable to any instrument. In the end, a Really Big Jam is fantastically bashed out, Watkins jumping onstage to make guitar noise and wiggle his arse, singer Vernon passing the mic around to anyone who can scream, until a Sixties girl group record emerges from the DJ booth. The opposite of quite good isn’t always quite bad. This is the opposite of sleepwalking professionalism, of songs played like they are on record. Chaos and fun, and you missed it.

Anyway, it’s the Diverse Records Christmas party! The Newport shop and associated label keeps on trucking, stuffing releases, charity calendars and GLC sex parties into its schedule and intimate spaces. As well as paralytically DJing the handsome staff have assembled a genuinely excellent, don’t-even-have-to-lie bill of local bands too: headliners Strange News From Another Star see off a stellar year of deranged garage rock and terrifying audience interaction before Jimmy joins Future Of The Left for a mini-tour of receptive foreign countries. Their debut EP ‘Full Frontal’ came out earlier this year and you should know every lyric by now. Science Bastard, ‘fresh’ from the studio, will bring their fractured guitar blasts, double drumming, collapsing keyboard stands and crowd molestation, while Sick Livers spell out P-A-R-T-Y with greasy sex offender rock, grinning aviator shades and entertaining public interfering. Okay, so all these bands have a thing for touching up the crowd, but that just evokes the spirit of Christmas, right? And a happy new year to you.

Okay, this one’s pretty simple. Pintogram are a punk rock band who dress as Lucha wrestlers and play songs about fighting and Mexican food. I mean, let’s not deconstruct things too much. You don’t get sick of finding pound coins on the floor, or watching tall buildings get demolished do you? And they rock out pretty well in our opinions, so we request your presence at the front for this one. Some quality lurking in the support acts too: check out Spider Kitten and Atomck’s way with growling, blasting noise and queasy, sonic harrassment. More fun than organising an anti-Hooters campaign. ¡que os divirtáis!

11/08/2010

Olah muchachos! We are Pintogram, born from a drunken conversation about Lucha (Mexican Wrestling). Always looking for new ways to hurt ourselves for the entertainment of others we formed. We sing songs about Lucha, fighting and Mexican food. You will not know our faces for this is not for you to see, our masks are our identity and our pride. We try to incourage as many fellow Lucha to attend our shows as possible, if you have a mascaras, wear it to our show, it makes sense to us. ALL VIOLENCE, NO MALICE!
